one of them being safety Lorenzo Jerome of St. Francis (Pa.). Jerome was thought by many to be a mid-to-late-round prospect, and so far,Authentic Solomon Thomas Jersey,The 49ers brought in a talented crop of undrafted rookies following the 2017 NFL Draft,Authentic Reuben Foster Jersey, it sounds like he's performed like a player who should have heard his name called long before reaching free agency.
Jerome was an All-American performer at St. Francis,Authentic Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey, 59 tackles,Authentic C. J. Beathard Jersey, and as a senior he had six interceptions, 5.5 tackles for loss,Joe Williams Jersey, and a kick return for a touchdown. He went on to prove in pre-draft All-Star games that he was capable of performing at a high level against top talent, but his measurables (5-11, 185, 11 passes broken up, 4.7 40) were a point of concern. Jerome fell out of the draft, for whatever reason, and now it sounds like the rest of the NFL's loss could be the 49ers' gain.
I'm just as intrigued as you are," 49ers general manager John Lynch said Tuesday,"We're just as intrigued, when asked about Jerome on the Gary and Larry Podcast on KNBR.
If anyone knows what to look for in a safety it's Lynch, who most likely will eventually be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame for being one of the league's top safeties for much of his career. Lynch said Jerome's ability to find the ball is something he's seen before and is something that definitely jumps out.
"There's always the question, 'Okay, certain guys -- I played with Ronde Barber, he's at St. Francis (an FCS school), and the ball always just found him, and once you realize after a while, it's not finding him,Solomon Thomas Jersey, he's finding it,Reuben Foster Jersey," Lynch said. "Some people say,Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey,Authentic Joe Williams Jersey, how does translate to this? But I can tell you, 'They're just lucky. Every tip comes to them,C. J. Beathard Jersey,' but that's the way he's been out here. I think he led our team during the OTAs and all that in interceptions. So a guy who's done it in college, albeit at a smaller level, did it in the all-star games, and then he comes out here and it's still happening."
Jerome still has a challenge on his hands to make the 49ers roster, Jimmie Ward, Jaquiski Tartt, Vinnie Sunseri, which has experienced safeties in Eric Reid, and Don Jones, along with another intriguing undrafted rookie in Chanceller James. Lynch thinks Jerome could have to prove himself on special teams to make the roster but that he's good enough to pull it off.
"I like his chances, so he has a lot of competition and a lot of it's going to be how well he can translate to special teams. But the 40 time and all that, I think safety's a position where when you have great instincts, when you have great understanding of angles," Lynch said. "We do feel like safety is a strong position for us and we've got a lot of guys, you can get by on some of that. And it's not as if his numbers are so bad that he can't play. He can definitely play in this league, and we're excited to see if he can do enough to make this team."
