The first priority of most new NFL coaches is assembling a staff, and Steve Wilks appears to have made considerable headway in his first few days as Cardinals coach.
The team has yet to make any official announcements, but according to various reports,Authentic Cameron Heyward Jersey, at least seven positions have been filled.
“Number one, we’ve got to get a staff that are excellent teachers, that can relate to this generation. I say this all the time,Authentic Ryan Shazier Jersey, even with my kids,” Wilks said in his introductory news conference on Tuesday. “That’s the most important thing to me. Guys that are outstanding communicators, ‘I’m going to teach everybody the same, but I’m going to coach them differently.’
“I think the most important thing you’ve got to understand is personalities. Everybody is different in that room, this is a league about developing players. We know what you’re going to get in the first and second round,Authentic Anthony Chickillo Jersey, and I want to hire coaches that understand how to relate to different personalities. Most importantly, but you make your wealth in this league by developing players.”
So far, it appears two assistants under Bruce Arians might return: assistant receivers coach Kevin Garver and inside linebackers coach Larry Foote. Two more assistants who played for the Cardinals are expected to join the staff: secondary coach David Merritt and offensive line coach Ray Brown.
Wilks is expected to hire Panthers linebackers coach Al Holcomb as his defensive coordinator and has interviewed former Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Chargers coach Mike McCoy for the offensive coordinator position.
It’s unknown who will fill his special teams coordinator role.
Here’s a look at the positions that reportedly have been filled, according to multiple reports. One warning: This doesn’t mean deals are done.
As one unemployed NFL assistant said of being hired. “I’ll believe it when the contract is in front of me.”
Holcomb finished his fifth season as the Panthers linebackers coach and has worked with standouts such as Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis. Before that,Authentic Jesse James Jersey, Holcomb spent four years with the Giants after working as a college coach for 14 seasons.
Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones thinks running back Ezekiel Elliott is just scratching the surface on his capabilities on the field.
After a season marred in controversy as a result of a six-game domestic violence suspension, Elliott will attempt to return to elite form in 2018 — having led the NFL in rushing as a rookie in 2016. Jones believes there's much room for improvement with a full season on the horizon.
"I think there is a lot to improve upon," Jones toldThe Dallas Morning News during Senior Bowl practice Thursday. "There are so many great things about Zeke, which I think he's the first to say it, but yet there are so many things that if he'll improve and do better, then believe it or not, he can be an even better football player and a better representative of our organization.
Jones added that a key to Elliott reaching his potential will be improving his off-field behavior and avoiding distractions.
"I can only say you hope so," Jones said, right up through the start of last season, when asked if Elliott can avoid a public spotlight. "Zeke needs to answer that question. Obviously, there were things that were popping up. We haven't seen that as of late, and hopefully that's a good indicator that he understands.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield arrived at the Senior Bowl Tuesday with the desire to show "what I'm all about'' in the week's practices, but the Heisman Trophy winner wasn't prepared to say if he would play in Saturday's all-star game.
Since Mayfield didn't arrive in Mobile until Tuesday, his official measurements were taken later than other prospects at the game. With many in the league wanting to see if he measures in at over 6 feet tall, Womens Cameron Heyward Jersey, the official tale of the tape revealed Tuesday night that he stands 6-0 3/8 tall and weighs in at 216 pounds.
The Cowboys visited Bill Clinton in the White House several times in the 1990s after winning Super Bowls. But it was a very different White House, with Michael Irvin as the reported ringleader. Gone forever was the team’s reputation for moral rectitude as embodied by the Landrys and Staubachs, a two-story brick home on a suburban cul-de-sac next to the team’s Valley Ranch practice facility, Womens Vince Williams Jersey, replaced by one for debauchery and deviance. In truth,Womens Ryan Shazier Jersey, neither reputation was entirely deserved. For America’s Team, where many of the Cowboys indulged in excesses of all types. Wild stories of sex and drugs began circulating after news of the house leaked, as for America, the reality usually falls somewhere in between.
4. Romo botches snap
After winning their third Super Bowl in four years to cap off the 1995 season,Womens Joe Haden Jersey, sealing the loss and starting a “Choking Romo” narrative that continued, the Cowboys endured a disappointing decade. And then some. By the time they played the Seattle Seahawks in the 2007 wild card game, they had gone through four coaches post-Jimmy Johnson and hadn’t won a playoff game in nearly 10 years. That sad stretch appeared over when Dallas, lined up for a 19-yard field goal with just over a minute left. But a good snap slipped through the hands of Tony Romo,Authentic Joe Haden Jersey, who had retained his holding duties despite becoming the team’s starting quarterback midway through the season. Romo picked up the ball and was tackled, trailing by one point, fairly or not (mainly not),Womens Anthony Chickillo Jersey, for the rest of his Cowboys career.
Late in the third quarter of Super Bowl XIII, the Cowboys trailed the Pittsburgh Steelers by a touchdown but appeared to have tied the game when Roger Staubach hit a wide-open Jackie Smith in the middle of the end zone for a 10-yard score. Except Smith, dropped it. “Oh, the sure-handed tight end playing in the final game of a stellar 16-year career, bless his heart,” Verne Lundquist said on the Cowboys’ radio broadcast. “He’s got to be the sickest man in America.” He wasn’t alone. Tom Landry threw up his hands in disgust. Staubach cringed. Cowboys fans cried as Dallas settled for a field goal and never did draw even in a 35-31 loss.
One of the greatest moments in San Francisco 49ers history was the ultimate heartbreak for the Cowboys. With Dallas desperately clinging to a six-point lead in the 1981 NFC championship game, the NFC’s dominant team of the 1970s, San Francisco drove 83 yards in the final minutes and faced a third-and-3 at the Cowboys 6. On a designed rollout to the right, three Cowboys, chased 49ers quarterback Joe Montana toward the sideline and nearly got him before Montana flung the ball, seemingly high and out of the back of the end zone in order to avoid the sack. You know the rest. Dwight Clark leaped out of nowhere. The ball stuck to his fingertips. The 49ers took the lead. Danny White got sacked and fumbled. And the Cowboys, including 6-foot-9 Ed “Too Tall” Jones, gave way to the 49ers for a full decade, failing to make the Super Bowl throughout the ‘80s.
1. The Jimmy Johnson-Jerry Jones divorce
As football marriages go, the Johnson-Jones partnership of old friends and former Arkansas teammates was a beautiful fairy tale … while it lasted. With Jones as hard-driving owner and Johnson as both swaggering head coach and savvy GM, to Super Bowl champions four years later. But friction began to develop as each man felt unappreciated by the other and Jones sought more control over football decisions. After a second straight championship in 1993, Dallas went from 1-15 in 1989, they parted ways, leaving Cowboys fans to wonder what could have been had their egos not gotten in the way. Yes, Dallas still won the title two years later, their first season together, with coach Barry Switzer benefitting from the talent that Johnson accumulated, but the franchise has never been the same since. With Jones calling the football shots, Dallas has won two playoff games in the last 21 years.
