The Pittsburgh Penguins made plenty of moves Friday night — on the ice, with the roster and in the standings.
Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin each had two goals and an assist and the Penguins moved into first place in the Metropolitan Division by routing the Carolina Hurricanes 6-1 for their season-best sixth straight victory.
And general manager Jim Rutherford was just as busy as his players were,Authentic Marcus Gilbert Jersey, pulling off a mid-game trade in which Pittsburgh picked up center Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators as part of a push for a third straight Stanley Cup.
we're going for it,"Obviously, who always tries to get better,Womens Vince Williams Jersey, too."," forward Patric Hornqvist said. "And that's the kind of organization you want to play for,Womens Fletcher Cox Jersey, and that's what we try to do every day we're on the ice
As part of the complicated three-team deal, the Penguins sent defenseman Ian Cole to Ottawa and forward Ryan Reaves to the Vegas Golden Knights.
"It was interesting leading up to the pre-game meeting, for obvious reasons,Womens Torrey Smith Jersey," coach Mike Sullivan said.
who is one of the league's most valuable players,Dealing Erik Karlsson, but it's a move they may be forced to make sometime in the next year. His contract is set to run out after next season, they can't afford to lose him for nothing., isn't an ideal endgame for the Ottawa Senators, and with no extension imminent
Trading him before the deadline has become a more realistic outcome in recent weeks. Ottawa has faded from the postseason hunt, and the 27-year-old defenseman would command a greater return with a year left on his contract than he would as a rental in 12 months' time.
Travis Yost of reported the Senators are looking into a potential three- or four-team trade in order to maximize the number of suitors by spreading the money around. In addition,Womens Ramon Foster Jersey, the front office is trying to include Bobby Ryan's bloated $7.25 million cap hit in the deal.
All told, the Tampa Bay Lightning still feel like the most logical fit for Karlsson. They are a championship contender with a ridiculous amount of talent up front, led by Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos. Picking up another high-end blueliner could put them over the top.
he New York Rangers sit in the Metropolitan Division basement,Authentic Vince Williams Jersey, which could lead to some veteran players' departures, including the likes of Ryan McDonagh and winger Rick Nash.
Like Karlsson, the 28-year-old's contract expires after the 2018-19 campaign. So New York must at least consider moving him now or during the offseason,Authentic Fletcher Cox Jersey, when they should be able to recoup some serious future assets in a trade.
Pierre LeBrun of reported the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins are among the potential landing spots for the defenseman, who's tallied 26 points in 49 games this season. The Bruins are waiting to see whether the asking prices falls before the deadline,Authentic Torrey Smith Jersey, though.
Toronto is an intriguing fit since its up-and-down defensive play has wasted some strong performances from Auston Matthews and the team's young, dynamic offense. McDonagh would bring much-needed defensive stability and leadership to the organization.
The Carolina Hurricanes learned Friday afternoon that center Jordan Staal would not be in the lineup against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Hurricanes said Staal would miss the game for personal and family reasons. Without Staal, the Canes couldn’t slow down the streaking Penguins, losing 6-1 at PNC Arena to extend their winless streak to four games.
even with Staal the Canes might have struggled against the Pens (36-23-4),Authentic Timmy Jernigan Jersey,In truth, the Pens are looking very much like a team that could win a third straight Stanley Cup, an active defense and goalie Matt Murray looking sharp in net., who have won six straight and are 7-0-1 in their last eight games. With each passing week, with scoring balance throughout the lines
and Murray did his part with 27 saves.,Phil Kessel had two goals and an assist, and Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin a goal and two assists apiece for the Pens. Sidney Crosby scored, as did defenseman Olli Maatta
“They capitalized on our mistakes,” Canes coach Bill Peters said. “We made enough mistakes and they make you pay. When you make mistakes against this team it ends up in the back of the net. And that’s what they did.”
Despite the loss, the Canes (27-24-10) remained one point out of playoff position in the Eastern Conference with the NHL trade deadline coming up Monday. Carolina plays at Detroit on Saturday and Peters said he did not think Staal would make the trip.
was all but decided after the first 30 minutes. The Pens led 4-1 as the Riley Sheahan line with Kessel and Guentzel on the wings dominated most of their shifts.,The game, played before a lively crowd of 18,182 at Arena
earning a 10-minute misconduct penalty.,When the score reached 6-1 in the third, Canes goalie Cam Ward smashed his paddle against the cage, then gave the handle a fling in disgust
“It was a little too easy to access our net at times,” Peters said.
Guentzel scored his 20th of the season in the first, going backdoor to beat goalie Cam Ward with an easy tap-in. Maatta then made it 2-0 after a faceoff win by the Pens in the Carolina zone, spurring the Canes’ best moments of the night.
With Staal out, Elias Lindholm centered the line with Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho and the line produced a goal as Teravainen scored his 15th in the second.
The Canes followed up the score by keeping the Pens pinned down in the Pittsburgh zone, Womens Marcus Gilbert Jersey, making a change as Malkin and wingers Carl Hagelin and Patric Hornqvist were on the ice for almost three minutes.
The Canes’ Brock McGinn and Lee Stempniak each had quality scoring chances in the offensive flurry but couldn’t finish.
The Pens have finishers and few better than Kessel. The veteran forward scored on a shot from the left circle off a Guentzel pass, then crashed the net to beat Ward and has 26 goals this season.
During the game, the Pens wrapped up a three-team trade with Ottawa and Vegas,Authentic Ramon Foster Jersey, with Pittsburgh’s key acquisition center Derick Brassard from the Senators. Brassard could fill the Pens’ need for a third-line center although the Sheahan line was impressive Friday.
