The New York Giants entered the 2016 season with a few narratives they were hoping to ditch. The one narrative that stood out above the rest was their inability to close out and come away victorious in close games. That narrative was flipped in just one year after transitioning from head coach Tom Coughlin to Ben McAdoo.
Before we look at where this narrative falls for the Giants now, it’s important to look at how we got here. In the final years under Coughlin,Womens Fabian Moreau Jersey, heading into 2017,Womens Samaje Perine Jersey, the Giants became the one team NFL fans could count on to lose in heartbreaking fashion on nearly a weekly basis.
Through the first 12 weeks of the 2015 season,Womens Montae Nicholson Jersey, and what was left of their playoff hopes died soon after, the Giants jumped out to a 5-7 record. The postseason was slipping out of reach, but it didn’t have to be that way. The Giants’ record would have looked very different if the duration of an NFL game lasted just 58 minutes and 45 seconds instead of 60 minutes.
If every single one of the Giants’ first 12 games had ended 75 seconds earlier, if every game had been shortened to just 59 minutes and 23 seconds, or with a 1:15 still remaining on the game clock, the Giants would have jumped out to a 9-3 start in 2015. Digging a little deeper, with the last 37 seconds chopped off the clock, the Giants would have jumped out to an 8-4 start in 2015.
The Giants blew five fourth quarter leads in their first 12 games and earned the narrative that was bestowed on them.
This narrative didn’t start in 2015, it built over time. According to NFL analyst Warren Sharp, however. Like most great narratives, the Giants were 1-8 in games decided by 3 or fewer points dating back through 2012 with Coughlin. That research was published before the Giants blew another two games fitting this metric.
With McAdoo in and Coughlin out, a new era of Giants football was ushered in. McAdoo immediately put his stamp on the franchise by playing his rookies early. Sterling Shepard lined up with the first-team offense in his first practice and started his first career game with the Giants. But this wasn’t the only change McAdoo brought with him.
McAdoo brought a coaching style that was less risk averse. In simpler terms, McAdoo played to win in close games rather than playing not to lose.
This was never more obvious than when the Giants were faced with a fourth down while the offense was already in field goal range. McAdoo showed a willingness to go for it on fourth downs,Authentic Fabian Moreau Jersey, rather than settle for three,Authentic Samaje Perine Jersey,Authentic Montae Nicholson Jersey,Authentic Colt McCoy Jersey, from all different areas of the field. He was also not limited by the lead or time remaining on the clock.
In Week 10,Womens Colt McCoy Jersey, he opted to go for it. Eli Manning connected with Shepard on a beautifully drawn up play, McAdoo was faced with this decision during a Monday Night game against the Bengals. The Giants trailed by a score of 20-14 and they had advanced the ball to the Bengals’ 9-yard line. After three unsuccessful attempts to score, but instead, the Giants were faced with a 4th-and-goal opportunity from the Bengals’ 3-yard line with 14:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. McAdoo could have opted to cut the lead to 3 points, the Giants took a 21-20 lead, and that was the last score of the ball game for either side.
McAdoo’s willingness to coach an aggressive style in late games wasn’t limited to his showing against the Bengals and it also wasn’t limited to the offensive side of the ball. McAdoo never stopped Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo from calling his aggressive style of defense. No matter how tight the game was in the fourth quarter, McAdoo trusted his defensive boss, and Spagnuolo continued to deliver aggressive play calls with heavy blitzing.
McAdoo also showed an understanding of situational clock management. In Week 2,In year one, McAdoo used all three of his timeouts in perfect fashion, the Giants were locked in a 13-13 tie with the Saints -- there was 2:54 remaining in the fourth quarter when the Giants offense took over. The Giants methodically moved the ball down the field, and the game-winning field goal was kicked with 0:00 remaining on the clock.
In year two, the Giants hope McAdoo will take a major leap forward as a play caller. He struggled at times to juggle play-calling with head coach duties. One area the Giants no longer need to worry about improving is their ability to win close games. McAdoo fixed that in just one year by introducing his own coaching style in close games. The early results have already flipped this narrative on its head. |
